Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas
The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas was one of the twelve apostles of Christ who is well known for his initial doubting of the Resurrection. Once he saw the Resurrected Lord with his own eyes, he exclaimed, “my Lord and my God!” This scene is often erroneously referred to as “the Doubting of Thomas”. In the Greek, the inscription on the iconography reads “the Touching of Thomas” and the Slavonic, “the Belief of Thomas”. After the ascension of the Lord, the Apostle Thomas went all throughout the lands, being the most daring and travelling to many remote places such as Ethiopia and India, where in the latter country he was crowned with martyrdom. Having been speared five times, his soul departed to the Lord.
