The third presentation by the Greek Orthodox Christian Society for the 200 Year Anniversary of the Greek War of Independence took place on Sunday the 18th of
April in the Church Hall of St John’s Parramatta.
The presentation depicted the variety of ways that the Clergy nurtured the hope of revolution during 400 dark years of Ottoman occupation, preserving the Greek Orthodox identity through education and Church life.
Countless priests, monks and hierarchs stood side by side with the people in their sufferings; supported the revolutionaries in their activities and some of them even took up arms, inspiring and leading others into battle. The monasteries became fortresses and refuges, offering shelter, food, ammunition and supplies to fighters and ordinary people seeking shelter.
“Faith and love of country were one and the same thing and the freedom which the Greeks thirsted for was not just the freedom which all revolutionaries fight for but the freedom which preserves and guards faith.” (Fotis Kontoglou)
The presentation gave everyone the opportunity to remember and honour the Clergy. We remembered the thousands of priests and monastics, the Neomartyrs, and the priests who taught in secret. We remembered the educators, Eugenios Voulgaris, St Kosmas Aitolos and the Kollyvades Fathers. We honoured the Monk Samuel of Suli and Papathymios who resisted Ali Pasha. We paid our respects to the great Ethnomartyr Patriarch Gregory V and Clerics turned Klephts like Athanasios Diakos, Bishop Germanos, Bishop Isaiah of Salona, Papaflessas and Bishop Joseph of Rogon.
All of this was depicted dramatically through narration, demotic songs, poetry and traditional dance which was warmly received by the audience. We are grateful to Mr and Mrs Papapetros for The traditional costumes that enriched the performances.
His Eminence our Archbishop Makarios was represented by His Grace, Bishop Aimilianos, who addressed the audience as well as Professor Vasilios Adrachtas, the Secretary for the Organising Committee of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese for the 200 Year Anniversary of the Greek Revolution.
The Abbot Fr Eusebios and former Abbot Fr Stephanos of Pantanassa Monastery, together with the monastic brotherhood supported this event with their presence as well as other members of the Clergy of our Archdiocese.
Η ΠΡΟΣΦΟΡΑ ΤΟΥ ΚΛΗΡΟΥ ΣΤΟ 1821
Η τρίτη κατά σειρά εκδήλωση της Ορθόδοξης Χριστιανικής ΄Ενωσις (Ο.Χ.Ε.) για τα 200 χρόνια από τη Επανάσταση του 1821, υπό την αιγίδα της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αυστραλίας έγινε την Κυριακή 18/04/20 στο χωλ της Εκκλησίας του Αγίου Ιωάννου Parramatta.
Θέμα της Παράστασης ήταν, « Η Προσφορά του Ιερού Κλήρου στην Επανάσταση».
Μέσα από κατάλληλες διαφάνειες, αφηγήσεις, απαγγελίες, τραγούδια και σκετς, δόθηκε στους θεατές μια πλήρης και εμπεριστατωμένη εικόνα της προσφοράς του Κλήρου στον αγώνα για την ελευθερία.
Μορφές όπως του Εθνομάρτυρος Πατριάρχη Αγίου Γρηγορίου του Ε’, του Παπαφλέσσα, του Αθανάσιου Διάκου, του Ευγένιου Βούλγαρη, του Σαμουήλ, των Κολλυβάδων Πατέρων κτλ. παρέλασαν επί σκηνής και μας ξαναθύμισαν πως «πάντα με αίμα γράφεται του κόσμου η ιστορία».
Η Χορωδία των Νέων και Νεανίδων ερμήνευσαν γι’ άλλη μία φορά με επιτυχία τα τραγούδια και τους ύμνους με την συνοδεία ορχήστρας, που έδωσε ιδιαίτερο τόνο σε όλη την Παράσταση. Οι νέοι της Ο.Χ.Ε. και οι νεανίδες του Ορθόδοξου Φιλικού Κύκλου, έδωσαν ακόμα περισσότερο χρώμα στην εκδήλωση με εθνικούς χορούς , ενώ οι παραδοσιακές στολές (του κου και της κας Δημ. Παπαπέτρου) που φορούσαν, συνέθεταν μια υπέροχη εικόνα λεβεντιάς και μεγαλοπρέπειας.
Τον Σεβασμιώτατο Αρχιεπίσκοπο μας κ.κ. Μακάριο αντιπροσώπευσε ο Θεοφιλέστατος Επίσκοπος Μελόης κ.κ. Αιμιλιανός ο οποίος ομίλησε και συνεχάρη τα μέλη της Ο.Χ.Ε. Παρών ήταν επίσης και ο καθηγητής κος Βασίλειος Αδραχτάς Γεν. Γραμματέας της Εθνικής Επιτροπής της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αυστραλίας για τους Εορτασμούς των 200 χρόνων από την Επανάσταση του 1821, που ομίλησε καταλλήλως και συνεχάρη τους διοργανωτές. Επίσης παρευρέθηκαν ο Καθηγούμενος της Ιεράς Μονής Παντανάσσης, π. Ευσέβιος με την συνοδεία του, καθώς και αρκετοί άλλοι ιερείς της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής μας.
Περιττεύει να πούμε πως το πολυπληθές ακροατήριο στο κατάμεστο χωλ, κατενθουσιασμένο, χειροκροτούσε και επευφημούσε τα δρώμενα επί σκηνής. Κατά γενική ομολογία, θα επιθυμούσαν τέτοιες παραστάσεις να γίνονταν πιο τακτικά.
