Sunday School Camp 2017

The highlight of the year for many Sunday School children from parishes all over Sydney is the annual camp. The camp was once again held at Vision Valley Conference Centre, Arcadia with over 80 children attending. The theme of this year's camp was "Heroes for Christ" with each group focusing on a piece of armour outlined in St Paul's Letter to the Ephesians. The children enjoyed the many outdoor and indoor activities as well as learning about their own group's spiritual meaning. Young Men’s Mid-Year Retreat

Starting in the evening of Friday 4th of August, 40 young men of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society attended their weekend retreat to Mangrove Mountain. The lessons centred around Panagia and the Transfiguration, in preparation for those upcoming feasts. For the first time at a mid-year retreat, the young men on attended a five-hour night vigil at Pantanassa Monastery to celebrate the Transfiguration of Christ. At the end of the camp, it was announced that around 10 members will be moving to the second group.

Visit to St Nicholas Parish, Darwin

With the blessing of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos, a group of around 30 members of the Greek Orthodox Christian Society and their families, visited the parish of St Nicholas, Darwin, on the weekend of July 1-3. The group was very warmly received by Fr Joel Xanthos and the entire parish community. On the Saturday, the group took part in the Divine Liturgy commemorating St Kosmas and St Damianos, in which the President of the Society and lay-preacher, Dr John Psarommatis, delivered the sermon. Young Adults

The Orthodox Christian Society meets on most Saturday nights during the year. In the young adults’ groups, we have the opportunity to undertake Bible study, consider the life of a Saint, the writings of the Fathers, or issues that relate to our Spiritual life in today’s world. Many of those in attendance are involved in the work of Sunday Schools, and we find that meeting on Saturday nights helps both preparing for Sunday School the next day, but more importantly for participation in the Divine Liturgy. Afternoon Tea Fundraiser

On Saturday 27th May, the Greek Orthodox Christian Society organised an afternoon tea fundraiser at the main building in Bexley. The money raised was used for the construction work currently being done on the building, in particular, to finance the cost of the floorboards. In attendance was the Greek Consul General of Sydney, Dr Stavros Kyrimis. The event was well attended and over $23,000 was raised.
